A Flavour Bomb from Italy – We Brought Back Chestnut Honey
Some say it tastes like chestnuts, others notice floral notes. It’s not overly sweet and finishes with a pleasantly bitter touch. One thing’s for sure – chestnut honey is a true rarity that will delight anyone who enjoys discovering unique flavours. We set off for sunny Italy, where we found this gem — and now you can taste it too, available on our e-shop.
The Land of Pasta, Pizza, and Sweet Chestnuts
Those who know us already realise how deeply we love Manuka. But we also enjoy discovering new flavours and seeking out unique honeys that we can bring to the Czech Republic for you to taste. This time, our journey in search of exceptional honeys took us to sunny Italy — specifically to the shores of Lake Garda (Lago di Garda). ☀️
Perhaps it was luck, perhaps destiny — but what truly matters is that we discovered an incredible honey. This region is famous for its sweet chestnuts, used to create a wide range of traditional delicacies. And as true honey enthusiasts, we were naturally drawn to one in particular — chestnut honey. 🌰🍯
Meeting the Italian Beekeeper
We visited the picturesque town of San Zeno di Montagna, a place brimming with delightful treats and charming little shops full of local specialities. The surrounding hills, blanketed in sweet chestnut trees, give rise to a variety of traditional products — from spirits and beers to flours and, of course, honey. The town even hosts a famous annual chestnut festival.
What caught our attention most was a small shop called La Casara de Baldo. Was it intuition, or simply an irresistible honey magnetism? Either way, it was worth it. Not only did we get to taste their locally produced chestnut honey, but we also met the beekeeper behind it.
Thanks to Víťa’s excellent Italian, we were even invited behind the scenes. The beekeeper guided us through the ancient chestnut grove and shared his process of producing chestnut honey. At that moment, we knew for sure — this was something we simply had to bring back to the Czech Republic. 🤩
Chestnut Honey – A True Original
This family-produced chestnut honey perfectly embodies everything we were looking for — a harmony of quality, tradition, and a touch of exotic flavour. It’s intriguing from the very first glance, with a colour that’s noticeably darker than most blossom honeys. That’s because chestnut honey is rich in natural pigments, tannins, minerals, and other compounds that give it its deep, amber hue.
Once you open the jar, you’ll be surprised by its aroma. Some people recognise notes of chestnuts and nuts, while others detect subtle hints of herbs and a trace of bitterness. Its taste is equally distinctive — less sweet, yet earthy and full-bodied, with a pleasantly bitter finish. It’s the perfect choice for anyone who doesn’t fancy overly sweet honey. 🍯
Give It a Try and See for Yourself
At the same time, chestnut honey doesn’t lack a touch of floral delicacy. It’s truly a unique explosion of flavours that’s hard to put into words. We recommend spreading it on bread, pairing it with nuts, or drizzling it over slices of cheese. It also makes a wonderful natural sweetener for your coffee — chestnut honey won’t alter its flavour profile, only add a gentle hint of sweetness. ☕👍
A Little Detour to Beenut Butter
In addition to discovering new honeys, we also took advantage of sunny Italy to test those we already have on offer!
"Have a squeeze and leap like a mountain goats!" 🐐
That seemed to be Theo and Víťa’s motto as they roamed the Italian mountains, fuelled by a tube of Beenut Butter. This blend of almonds, peanuts, premium acacia honey and a pinch of sea salt passed the endurance test with flying colours. Just a few squeezes were enough to get them bounding up Monte Baldo like mountain goats. 🏔️
